Hey! The sun is finally shining on my
(insert your own body part here) and it feels good. I guess I should explain some of the recent depression (
wah-baby's). I have a blood condition that can really alter my body, my mental attitude, my energy level, and especially my emotional stability.
It's weird. I do see an
oncologist for this. I don't have cancer but I am treated somewhat like a cancer patient. I do get treatments, some in the form of iron infusions. Because iron can be
sooo toxic, my blood levels have to reach a certain "low" before I can receive a treatment. From early Nov 07 to mid-March 08, my levels took a nose dive. It was a little scary. I know my body pretty good, so when I went to the Doc in Nov I knew I was on the
downslide. I let a nurse, new to the office and young, intimidate me. I let her convince me that my levels were "not all that low" and that I was okay. Boy, did I learn my lesson! I just chalked up the physical symptoms to the onset of the holidays, working longer days at my job, remodeling the house and such. It wasn't until I had some blood work done from my GP for my annual that I finally hit the wall. Let me
elaborate. I get up at 4 am each day to be at work at 5 am.. I don't eat
breakfast but I do wash down my
vitamins with Diet Lime Coke! For a few weeks, my stomach was really unsettled--duh! right? But when I started to get dry heaves every day and the particular morning, fasting for blood work, it was particularly bad. I had the blood draw around 8:30 am and was so sick that I wasn't sure I could go back to work.
(time for a shift in priorities!) I asked the doctor if I could get a shot of
phenergan, to settle my stomach so I could go back to work and it hit me---
LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. I finished my shift and headed straight to the blood doc. Yes, dangerously low blood cells. Yes I got the infusion, plus a "get of of work free pass" I was off for a solid week. I did feel better but not really up to snuff. The follow up 3 weeks later confirmed my levels were still low. I have to wait 2 more weeks and check levels again. That is in just 4 days. I believe I'll get a
little more treatment and hopefully by the end of May actually feel human again---
relative speaking of course!
MORAL OF THE STORY DO Trust yourself,
especially if you know your body like I do. Ask more questions if you aren't convinced with the answers you've been given. Believe in your doctor.
DON'T become a
hypochondriac by using the web to
diagnose yourself or be a major pain in the ass to your medical office.
Thanks for bearing with me
thru this "poor me"
episode. Stay tuned! I really do have a life to be thankful for!
Give thanks every day to those who brighten your day, make your work load easier and especially any higher
entity you trust in. Love
Ya'll.
